We started Unbiased in 2000, because we were uncomfortable with how product-focused the financial industry had become. We wanted to advise families, not sell them products. We did not realized how difficult it would be to excise ourselves from the standard industry model.

It has taken us years to accomplish what we think should be commonplace; for advisors to guide clients on what’s best for their family and to think beyond their investment portfolios.

However, without industry norms to rally against, our family-focused, net worth planning model would have never been developed.

President of Unbiased Financial Services Inc. and CEO of Unbiased Portfolio Management Inc.

John received his Bachelor of Commerce degree in 1980 and his MBA in 1986. He completed his Chartered Financial Planner designation in 1990, the Registered Financial Planner designation in 1997, and his Trust and Estate Practitioner designation in 2004.

He is a past President of the Institute of Advanced Financial Planners National Board and has served on the Board of Directors of the Southern Alberta Chapter of the Canadian Association of Financial Planners and the Calgary Estate Planning Council. John also spent 13 years in the Trust industry with National Trust, Canada Trust, and Royal Trust.

Yan is Chief Investment Officer and Portfolio Manager of Unbiased Portfolio Management Inc. Yan holds two degrees from Queen’s University; receiving his Bachelor of Commerce (Honors) with First Class Distinction in 2011 and his Bachelor of Arts with Distinction in Computing and Information Science in 2013.

Yan previously held the position of Portfolio Manager at Ross Smith Asset Management Inc., where he worked for 5 years prior to joining Unbiased Portfolio Management Inc. During his time at Ross Smith, Yan successfully completed the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation. In his spare time, Yan enjoys gourmet cooking.

Vice President of Unbiased Financial Services Inc.

Taylor comes to Unbiased Financial Services Inc. from the banking industry where he spent 3 years with RBC, leaving as Senior Account Manager. During his time with Royal Bank, he obtained his Certified Financial Planner (CFP) designation. His formal education includes a BA from the University of Victoria, which involved a one-year exchange at the University of East Anglia. He also holds an MBA with Distinction from Edinburgh Business School, Heriot-Watt University.

We’re located in Dafoe Terrace, a registered historic building in Victoria Park.
